A Brief Look at Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has gained in popularity thanks to the internet. While this method of treating ailments and patients has been around since the early 1920s, the use of volatile plant materials as a form of alternative medicine was relatively unknown. Through the use of essential oils, a person’s health or mood can be altered improving physical, mental, and emotional health.

While scientific evidence is sorely lacking, more research has been completed in an attempt to validate or dispute the claims of many of the properties associated with specific essential oils. As people start using aromatherapy more often, scientists are looking into this form of alternative medicine and the reported benefits.

There are four popular modes of application which include:

-- aerial transmission for the fragrance or disinfection of the immediate environment

-- direct inhalation for decongestion, respiratory disinfection, exportation, and even a variety of psychological benefits

-- topical application for baths, compresses, therapeutic epidermis care, and massage

-- rectal, vaginal, oral interfaces for congestion, infection, perfumery, parasites, and anointments

Now let’s explore some of the material utilized in aromatherapy such as:

Absolutes: Fragrant oils that have been extracted mainly from delicate plant tissues or flowers through supercritical fluid extraction or solvent. Absolutes can also be extracted from fragrant concretes, enfleurage, and butters using ethanol.

Essential Oils: Fragrant oils generally extracted from plants through a process called steam distillation or expression.

Herbal Distillates (also called hydrosis): This is the byproduct of distilling the main plant. Many of the byproducts of plants have benefits just like the main plant.

Carrier Oils: This is generally the diluted essential oils than have an oily plant base. The essential oils come through this oily skin.

Infusions: The combined aqueous extracts of more than one material of any given plant.

Aromatherapy is believed to work based on how the aroma works on the brain. However, people also tend to believe that this form of alternative method works because many of the plants in question do indeed have medicinal purposes. No one knows for sure why this form of therapy works, but for millions of people around the world, it offers relief, comfort, and even a cure when modern medicine is often left scratching its head.

When purchasing essential oils or other types of aromatherapy, you may hear some words such as: antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, antispasmodic, invigorating, or antioxidant. These can prove a great asset to your health, or these can prove a great detriment.

Because aromatherapy is an alternative therapy, there have been very few controlled studies completed to determine the validity of many of the responses. Some experts believe aromatherapy is nothing more than a placebo effect, but even more people will claim that the affects are indeed true and real.

If you are interested in aromatherapy, you should always keep in mind that not all countries regulate this term. Therefore, you should always be aware of what it is you are purchasing when buying those essential oils or other types of therapy. Many companies will claim it is an essential oil while no true oil is contained in the product.
