How Much Better Are “Hypoallergenic” Cosmetics?

When it comes to shopping for makeup or other types of cosmetics, one common term seen everywhere is “hypoallergenic”. When we see that simple phrase, we want to believe that the makeup is better for our skin causing fewer skin reactions that can range from a rash to serious skin aversions. But we have to stop and ask ourselves what is really being said when we see hypoallergenic cosmetics when out and about shopping for any type of beauty products.

The FDA does not regulate the word “hypoallergenic”. Cosmetics that contain the word are often using the word solely for marketing purposes. Why is this term used as a popular marketing phrase? Look at the word – hypoallergenic. Cosmetics with this word are generally thought to be less harsh on our body. But how can we be sure of this when all of our body chemistries differ?

The FDA did try to regulate the labeling of cosmetics using this word in 1975. The FDA stated that the label could be used if it is proven to cause less adverse reactions than cosmetics not having the label. However, this in and of itself can be confusing because it will depend a great deal on the brand of cosmetics used to compare the “hypoallergenic” cosmetics to.

However, the FDA statement back in 1975 was found to be invalid by U.S. Courts. This means that today, manufacturers can freely use the term as they see fit.

Knowing the best manufacturer for your cosmetics or personal hygiene needs means doing your homework. Not all cosmetics are going to be well suited for everyone’s body chemistry. However, the good news is that the harsh chemicals used in years past have mostly been replaced by safer, gentler chemicals.

The majority of cosmetics all have the same ingredients. How those ingredients are mixed is what changes from one manufacturer to the other. This means that when you shop for cosmetics, sometimes, more expensive is not always better. You may be able to get the same high quality from a less expensive label.

The term hypoallergenic is not going to necessarily keep you safe. If you have sensitive skin, you will need to try a variety of labels until you find one that is not harsh on your system. The best mode of testing this is by using a part of your body that will not be noticeable if there is an adverse reaction such as your forearm or leg. In addition, if you have a serious adverse reaction, see your physician and take your cosmetics with you.

When you are shopping for gentler cosmetics, you cannot rely on the label “hypoallergenic”. While many reputable labels will carry this term, it is up to you to decide which cosmetics are best for you.

Shopping for “hypoallergenic” cosmetics often means you have sensitive skin. You need a makeup or personal product that will not have adverse reactions with your body chemistry. Trial and error is your best method of finding which is best. Once you find the label perfect for your needs, you will find it is easy to find the cosmetics you need for your body’s health and happiness.
