When it comes to safety, pregnancy is one time where being safe is critical to the woman as well as the fetus. Staying safe is an important part of the process, and everything you come into contact with has the potential for great good as well as great harm. Knowing the difference can save you and/or your growing child. While many people are using aromatherapy these days, it must be noted special case should be taken when dealing with essential oils for pregnant women.

Essential oils for pregnant women can be a beneficial time in any life reducing stresses and bringing comfort to an expanding and often achy body. Knowing the right measurements for those oils is vital. Realize that the pure essential oil is, in essence, extracted plant oils and are generally very strong and potent.

There are many types of oils that if you are pregnant, considering becoming pregnant, or nursing that you should never come into contact with. Others are going to be ok but are not suggested in the first trimester. So many people are choosing to avoid these oils while pregnant all together to avoid any possible reaction.

However, there is no denying that essential oil for pregnant women can be extremely beneficial, healthy, and comforting at this special time!

There are a few rules to follow if you want to use essential oil for pregnant women:

-- Do not ever ingest any type of essential oil! Many of these are deadly even in the smallest of dosages. Keep all oils out of the reach of children and animals.

-- Pregnant women should always dilute the oils. Use 1% of the recommended usage in a carrier oil.

-- Always investigate the possible reactions to any oil. If it does not look safe, do not use it for any reason!

-- Speak with your healthcare provider, physician, or midwife concerning the safe use of essential oils.

-- Make sure the carrier oil you choose is safe as well.

-- If in doubt, simply do not use aromatherapy until after you give birth and stop nursing. Better safe than sorry.

Also, be aware of the importance of the carrier oil used in diluting your oils. Even the carrier oils have a wide variety of therapeutic benefits. Carrier oils are generally derived from fatty organisms from plants to animals. Carrier oils will not as easily evaporate, and generally, these carrier oils do not have a strong aroma.

Realize that carrier oils CAN go rancid! If your carrier oils “smell funny”, it may be time to toss it out and get a new one. If you are looking for an easy carrier oil, you can easily use Shea butter or Cocoa butter lotions until you can figure out or find a real carrier oil appropriate for the blending.
